Very helpful lovely Bun! But I suppose this once my question is a little more philosophical.

I will let you in on a secret-i am not a "joiner." I love people, I really do, in all their wonderful variety. But with very rare exceptions I never run across people who are both like me enough to understand me, and who are able to be good friends.

My personality is very independent, and so people who are so self-sufficient that we are similar in that way are also incredibly hard to connect with. Other than friendship itself, I would have nothing to offer them!

That's what's interesting about cheerleaders to me (even more than the outfits) its that helping people feel connected to one another is their role. It is fundamentally a kind of hospitality: helping strangers join together and enjoying themselves AS A GROUP.

I don't know if you've ever sat at a bar before. If you go alone to a strange bar and just sit there its entirely possible you could wait an hour before anyone other than the bartender and talks to you. But sometimes someone (usually, but not always, a woman) walks in, sits down, and suddenly the barriers to connection just melt away. Magically 20 people just staring at the TV or their phones start talking! And friendships start and everyone is laughing and talking and for a moment even painfully shy introverts such as myself are talking to girls and promoting wild stories. I cannot tell you how much I love those moments. But it is a type of social alchemy I lack all ability for.

And so the element of emotional distress behind my original question.

If you ever read A Christmas Carol by Dickens, even the miser Scrooge knew a man like that: Fezziwig! And it was at Fezziwig's party that even a younger Scrooge was able to have fun. A good host somehow fixes it that everyone has a good time. Which is a blessing even better than high kicks and synchronized dance moves.
